China’s import of rapeseed and its related products in December 2017

I. Import of rapeseed
    According to General Administration of Customs, China imported 329,700 tonnes of rapeseed in December 2017, down 28.2%from last month, but significantly up 36.7% from the same period last year. So far, China's imports of rapeseed totaled 4,747,100 tonnes in year 2017, 33.2% higher than the same period last year, particularly, imports of rapeseed in the first eight months amounted to 2,646,700 tonnes in year 2017/18, down 33.2% from the corresponding period in year 2016/17. As a matter of fact, rapeseed trade in 2016 was hindered factored in different requirement for rapeseed impurities between China and Canada. As a result, China’s imports of rapeseed dropped by 20% or so as compared to the former year. Though consensus had been reached during the 2016 G20 meeting between two governments, China's total imports in 2017 still failed to break the record high of 5.08 Mln tonnes in year 2014.

II. Import of rapeseed meal
    According to customs data, China imported 55,900 tonnes of rapeseed meal at ports in December 2017, down 30.2% from last month of 135,600 tonnes, but sharply up 91.7% on a year-on-year basis. Overall, imports of rapeseed meal in year 2017 amounted to 960,200 tonnes, twice of that in last year when imports were stumbled by policies. Among all customs districts in China, Nanjing ranked the top one in imports in the past months, followed by districts in Guangdong or Guangxi in terms of local consumption. Additionally, some areas in the South were still engaged in aquaculture due to favorable temperature there.

III. Import of rapeseed oil
    According to customs data, December imports of rapeseed oil totaled 58,000 tonnes in 2017, up 40.05% from the previous month, while total imports this year added up to 757,000 tonnes, up 8.18% from the same period in year 2016.
