China’s Customs: China imported 71.79 MMT of grains from Jan-Aug, down 14.1% y-o-y

China imported 11.04 mln tonnes of grains in August, 2019. The accumulative grain imports totaled 71.79 mln tonnes from January to August this year, down 11.78 mln tonnes by 14.1% from 83.57 mln tonnes of the corresponding period last year, according to China’s Customs. 

China imported 9.48 mln tonnes of soybeans in August, with the accumulative imports at 56.32 mln tonnes from January to August, down 5.71 mln tonnes by 9.2% from 62.03 mln tonnes from a year earlier. 

China imported 120,000 tonnes of wheat in August, a year-on-year decline of 11.8%; the accumulative imports were 2.10 mln tonnes from January to August, down 5.3% year on year.

China imported 230,000 tonnes of corn in August, compared to 390,000 tonnes in the previous month and 330,000 tonnes of the same month last year. The accumulative imports of corn totaled 3.73 mln tonnes from January to August, a year-on-year increase of 30.1%. In 2018/19 (from October), China imported 4.36 mln tonnes of corn till now, up 27.2% from 3.43 mln tonnes of the corresponding period a year earlier. 

China imported 280,000 tonnes of sorghum in August, compared to 210,000 tonnes in the previous month and 60,000 tonnes in the same month last year. The accumulative imports of sorghum totaled 500,000 tonnes from January to August, a year-on-year decline of 85.9%. In 2018/19 (from October), China imported 520,000 tonnes of sorghum till now, down 88% from 5.34 mln tonnes of the corresponding period a year earlier. According to the shipment estimates, China will receive 450,000 tonnes of US sorghum from July to September. 

China imported 360,000 tonnes of barley in August, compared to 300,000 tonnes in the previous month and 550,000 tonnes of the same month last year. The accumulative imports of barley totaled 3.75 mln tonnes from January to August, a year-on-year decline of 32.5%. In 2018/19 (from October), China imported 4.32 mln tonnes of barley till now, down 42.1% from 7.46 mln tonnes of the corresponding period a year earlier.
