The outbreak of the COVID-19 was adding to global economic downward pressure and strongly hurt commodity market in the first half of 2020, making international crude oil prices turn negative. In addition, lockdown across the globe was dampening the demand for edible oils. Hence, palm oil market also lost ground under pressure during that period. Whilst the pandemic was wreaking havoc across the globe, Malaysia, world’s second largest palm oil producing country, was trapped in a lack of labour, in addition to unfavorable weather conditions, palm oil production in this country kept staying below the forecast. By the end of October, palm oil stocks in Malaysia have fallen to a three-year low. Meanwhile, China is purchasing U.S. soybeans at a brisker pace in order to fulfill bilateral phase-one trade deal, and lower U.S. soybean production also sharply reduced stocks to below 200 million bushels, so that U.S. soybean futures surged to the highest level in over four years. Besides, the oils supplies get tightening in China and speculators are flowing into the market due to a warming global inflation expectation, so palm oil prices rise both at home and abroad. The most-active palm olein contract broke the key 7,000 CNY on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange in late November, to hit the highest point in more than seven years.
Palm oil output in Southeast Asian nations has been decreasing seasonally entering November, and its stockpiles have been at a low level in Malaysia as the production is crippled as the country has been imposing measures to contain the coronavirus. Palm oil stocks in main consuming country, China, have also been low. Meanwhile, the market is concerned about soybean crop outlook in South America under uncertain weather, coupled with brisk export demand in the U.S., so global soybean supply is tightening. How will U.S. soybean futures trend? Can Indonesia upgrade B30 into B40 in 2021? Will there be an increment in palm oil consumption in biodiesel? How about palm oil market in China? Cofeed thus releases its latest report China Palm Oil Market in 2020 and Its Outlook in 2021, to review palm oil market in 2020 based on the first-hand data from Cofeed Information and Research Department. The report makes an analysis of supply/demand pattern, import cost and margin changes in at home and abroad, and makes a rational expectation on the market in 2021, so as to help industry insiders seize the market opportunity.
